Nextplastics- Intelligent, Autonomous, Self-Energized, Networkable Devices

This project aims at creating a smart electronic device (i.e prepared to process information) capable of interacting with the surrounding area by means of input and output sensors and actuators, making possible wireless mesh communication with other co-related devices and supplied by, for example, a natural energy source, in particular a light source. The goal is to create an electronic device – smart and autonomous – free of electric connection or communication cables.

Prototype 1.1. -  Minimalist version – wireless mesh communication digital and analogical I/O smart device
To simplify and, especially, to obtain a reduced cost input device, the first functional device will integrate the following:

  1. Smart module device (CPU)
      • Low transfer rate wireless communication (Zigbee), suitable to be used in domestic or industry environment and possibly using mesh networking connectivity
      • Some digital inputs/outputs
      • Transformer or batteries power supply
      • Remote and integrated management and control
      • Remote reprogramming is considered.

Prototype 1.2 – Extended Version, universal use – interaction and energy recovering autonomous smart device for device’s global and remote control.
Introducing new modules will increase this device’s functionalities. One of the most interesting functionalities will be the incorporation of components that will supply energy autonomously. Wind energy and photovoltaic cells, separately or cumulatively will provide a total energetic autonomy to these devices.

This smart module electronic device will integrate the following:

1. Smart module device (CPU)

      • Low transfer rate wireless communication (Zigbee), suitable to be used in domestic or industry environment and possibly using mesh networking connectivity
      • Remote and integrated management and control
      • Remote reprogramming is considered
      • Digital inputs to connect to signallers/ sensor devices
      • Analogical inputs; sensors (Temperature, Brightness, Pressure…)
      • Digital outputs for actuators and signallers
      • Analogical outputs;
      • Other outputs to control and/or communicate with other devices
      • Signal and Energy bus to connect to other modules.

2.  Long term batteries supply (5 years or more), incorporating monitoring of the battery status;

3.  Energy recovery module: reusing the energy (ambient lighting or sun energy) by means of photovoltaic cells;

4.  Ethernet Module to connect to a conventional wired network; 

5.  Management Software Module; management of the smart devices network and interconnection via Ethernet wired with other existing management and control systems (domestic or industry);

6.  (*) Energy recovery module: for reusing wind energy (mini/micro wind generator);

7.  (*) Other modules: GPS, GSM/GPRS, ...;

8.  (*) LCD Module for data displaying;

9.  (*) Module for manual data / configuration input;

10.  (*) RFID reader.

(*) - These modules are only examples, and it will not be considered for now

 

Possible purposes
A device with these features may be used in almost all situations. Using this device may be considered every time that an autonomous and smart device is needed and in situations where the communication does not need to be very fast. The utilization may be in interior or exterior environment, as the following examples:

      • Automation and industrial control
      •  Data collection
      • Surveillance
      • Toys,
      • Autonomous Equipments.
